Directions EMEA: The Dynamics NAV conference

Directions is an independent conference hosted in North America and Europe each year and sponsored by Microsoft. It is the event for Dynamics NAV partners and has become the place where Microsoft makes major announcements.

Directions EMEA 2017 opened in Madrid today with a lively keynote delivered by Marko Perisic, General Manager, Microsoft Dynamics 365. Marko has been a champion of NAV in particular and the mid-market Dynamics solutions in general for a number of years. That Marko’s title now includes “Dynamics 365” is perhaps a clue as to the eventual name for Dynamics NAV going forward.

Today at the keynote, NAV was still NAV. Yet the latest release, still working under its codename “Tenerife” was sporting the Dynamics 365 brand.

Does it matter? Yes, after the confusion in recent weeks, this is a healthy indicator for the future. NAV will be delivered as a full SaaS solution under the Dynamics 365 brand (probably as a “business edition” to differentiate from what was Dynamics AX and is now under D365 Enterprise).

NAV as a brand continues for the on premise option. Confused? To put simply, anything with the suffix “365” indicates SaaS; anything labelled NAV can be procured as a perpetual or subscription licence and deployed where required.

Also announced was the confirmed release date for the next version of Dynamics NAV: NAV 2018 will be released on 1st December 2017.

All the above confirmed a lot of old news and dispelled some rumours. It confirms what we had always known: NAV is the ERP solution for the mid-market, with purchase and deployment options to suit all businesses.
