Last month, Principal of Holy Cross, Mr della-Spina introduced a new extra-curricular activity into the school ‘Code Club’ that encourages the children to take a hands on interest creating their own websites, games and animations using technologies such as Scratch, HTML/CSS and Python.
Principal Mr della-Spina commented, “New technology investments and digital transformation of business are on the agenda for most companies, so we decided it was important to bring this more into focus in the school environment. Understanding technology and learning to code is more than just a vocational skill; it changes the way children analyse and solve problems and encourages creative thinking and collaboration; so it’s vital for our children’s future and it’s only right that we support them as much as we can. Code Club is just the beginning”.

There is a shortage of young people joining the technology industry and I believe it’s critically important that we encourage activities in schools such as Code Club, which equips children with the hands on skills and awareness at such an early age, enabling them to embrace technology into everyday life.
After speaking with the school, it was refreshing to hear the amount of young girls who had signed up and were learning about coding too. Currently only 17% of jobs in the technology sector are held by women, but by introducing fun activities like Code Club, more girls will start to understand more and see the potential career path they could have in this area.”
