According to law firm RPC, recalls of unsafe foods jumped by 40% in 2017/18 and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) reported that there was a 36% increase in food and allergen alerts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland between 1 April 2018 and 31 March 2019. Allergy alerts had increased by 28% while food alerts were up by 52%.
